Ashbourne's old barns and buildings
Ashbourne sits on the edge of the Peak District, and the buildings change with the land. South of the town, around Snelston, Osmaston, Shirley and Brailsford, it's red-brick farmhouses and brick barns with oak trusses. North towards Dovedale and the White Peak, around Fenny Bentley, Tissington, Thorpe and Parwich, it's stone barns, cottages and walls. Much of the town centre is Georgian brick and stone. Whether a barn is mid-conversion or long since a home, the jobs are much the same.
What we do on barns and old buildings
- Barn conversions: the whole shell blasted before plastering and first fix, so the trusses and brick come up clean together
- Oak beams and trusses: black paint, old stain and limewash off beams, purlins and lintels
- Brick and stone walls: paint, soot, algae and grime off inside and outside walls, with the pressure set for soft brick and stone
- Fireplaces and inglenooks: soot and old paint off brick and stone, often in the same visit as the beams
- Steel-framed farm buildings: rusty frames, Dutch barns and fixed farm steelwork blasted and painted where they stand
Gates, garden furniture, wheels and anything else that can be moved can come to the yard instead. For what to expect inside a home, read can you sandblast oak beams?

Frequently asked questions
How far are you from Ashbourne?
About 13 miles south as the crow flies, down the A515 past Sudbury. Our yard is at Belmont Farm, Belmot Road, Needwood, near Burton upon Trent DE13 9PH. For barns, beams and brickwork we come to you.
When is the best time to sandblast a barn conversion?
Before plastering, windows and first fix go in. An empty shell is quick to sheet and clean, and the trusses, purlins and brick all come up together. We can still clean a finished barn, with the room sheeted and masked first.
Can you clean old brick and stone without damaging it?
Yes. Soft handmade brick and limestone need a gentler media and lower pressure than harder stone, so we test a small patch first and set the method from that. If a surface is too soft to blast safely, we'll tell you.
Do I need permission to sandblast a listed barn?
Check before you book. Cleaning or stripping a listed building can need listed building consent. For Ashbourne and the Derbyshire villages around it, ask Derbyshire Dales District Council. For Mayfield and Ellastone, it's East Staffordshire Borough Council. Inside the Peak District National Park, including Fenny Bentley, Tissington, Thorpe, Parwich and Ilam, it's the National Park Authority. We'll give you details of our method to send their conservation officer.
Is it messy?
Sandblasting is dusty work, so we sheet off and mask anything staying in place, and clear up when we finish. In a lived-in home we'll tell you beforehand what needs moving.
Do you blast steel-framed farm buildings?
Yes. Rusty portal frames, Dutch barns and fixed farm steelwork are blasted and painted on site. Our operatives hold SPA passports and IPAF cards for work at height, and every job has RAMS.
How do I get a price?
WhatsApp us a few photos of the barn or room, with rough sizes and what's on the surface: paint, stain, limewash or soot. Most jobs can be priced from photos.
