Belmont blasts narrowboat and canal boat hulls back to bare steel, removing old bitumen blacking, rust and mill scale so a new coating can bond properly. Hull blasting is done when the boat is out of the water, at a boatyard, dry dock or marina.

Our yard at Needwood is a short trip from the Trent & Mersey Canal through Burton, Shobnall and Alrewas, and within easy reach of the Coventry, Staffordshire & Worcestershire and Caldon canals.

Why blast a hull?

  • Layers of old blacking stop new coatings bonding and hide pitting
  • Blasting exposes the steel, so you can see the true condition and plan any overplating
  • A blasted hull gives epoxy and two-pack systems the profile they need to last for years rather than seasons

What we blast

Hulls, base plates and swims, as well as cabin tops and steelwork for repaint, plus rudders, tillers and fittings. Tell us the boat's length, where it will be out of the water and the coating you plan to use.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

Does the boat need to be out of the water?

Yes. Hull blasting is done with the boat lifted out or in dry dock, at a boatyard or marina. Tell us where it will be and when, and we'll plan around the slot.

Can you apply blacking or epoxy after blasting?

We can prime blasted steel straight away to stop flash rust. Many owners and boatyards then apply their chosen hull system, and we can discuss applying it ourselves when we quote.

Can you blast cabin tops and superstructure?

Yes. Cabin tops and steel superstructure can be blasted for a full repaint. Fittings and windows are removed or masked first.

How do I get a quote for my narrowboat?

Send the boat's length, its location, when it will be out of the water and what's on the hull now. Photos help.
