One week it's a tracked crusher. The next, a set of crates for a Jack Russell breeder.

We recently blasted and refinished a set of steel dog crates for a Jack Russell breeder. It's a good example of the everyday work that comes through the yard alongside the big industrial jobs.
What did the breeder need?
A set of steel crates taken back to clean metal and given a fresh finish. Crates in daily use take plenty of punishment. Dogs chew and scratch at the bars, trays slide in and out, doors open and shut many times a day, and everything gets washed down again and again. Sooner or later the original finish wears through at the welds, corners and door edges, and once the steel is exposed, rust follows.
Blasting and refinishing gives sound steel crates a completely new surface, so they can carry on in use for a good while yet.
Why does the finish on a dog crate matter?
Easier to keep clean
A smooth, sealed surface wipes down and dries quickly. Rust and flaking paint hold on to dirt.
Kinder to dogs
No rough, rusty edges or loose flakes for dogs to chew or rub against.
Smart and cared for
Fresh, even colour shows the crates are well looked after, which matters when people visit.
Built to keep going
Good steel crates are worth keeping, and a refinish gives them a second life.
How do you blast and refinish a dog crate?
- Photos firstWhatsApp us pictures of the crates, with rough sizes and how many there are.
- Strip them outTrays, bedding, covers and anything plastic or fabric come out, as they can't be blasted or coated.
- Protect moving partsMention hinge pins, catches and anything that needs to move freely, and they'll be masked.
- BlastEvery bar, weld and corner back to bare metal, with the pressure set so thinner wire isn't distorted.
- CoatFinished soon after blasting, so the bare steel never gets the chance to rust.
What is the best finish for a steel dog crate?
For most crates and pens, powder coating is the best choice. It's cured with heat into a hard, smooth skin that copes with scratching and regular washing far better than a coat of paint. You can choose gloss, satin or matt, and ask for any RAL colour. Gloss and satin are the easiest to wipe down. Black and dark greys are practical, though a bright colour is just as easy if you'd like crates that stand out.
Kennel runs and pens that are too big to move are better primed and painted, on site if needed. If your crates or panels are galvanised, say so when you get in touch, as galvanised steel needs a different preparation before coating.
What else can be refurbished the same way?
Most steel that lives alongside animals:
- Kennel panels and runs
- Puppy pens and play pens
- Cages and dog boxes
- Dog guards for vehicles
- Feeding stations and bowl stands
- Poultry runs and aviary frames
- Stable fittings and yard gates
- Hurdles, feeders and troughs
For farm and livestock kit, see agricultural shot blasting. Garden gates, furniture and other metal from around the home are covered under gates and garden metalwork and residential blast cleaning.

Is any job too small for a blasting yard?
Not at all. The yard handles tracked crushers and grain trailers as well as dog crates, and every job gets the same care. Our 23-metre blast unit and mobile teams take on quarry plant and industrial steelwork, and smaller pieces go through exactly the same blast and coat process. Have a look at our projects to see the range.
How much does it cost to refurbish dog crates?
It comes down to how many crates there are, how big they are and what state they're in. WhatsApp us a photo of the crates, telling us how many there are, roughly how big and the colour you're after, and we'll get a free quote back to you. You're welcome to drop crates off at Belmont Farm, Needwood, near Burton upon Trent, and if there are a lot of them, ask us about collection. For anything else, call 01283 813528 or get in touch.
Frequently asked questions
Can you powder coat a dog crate?
Yes. Each crate is blasted to clean steel first and then powder coated, which gives a hard, washable finish in the colour you choose.
Can you refurbish folding crates?
Yes. Folding crates are blasted and coated like any other. Point out the hinges and catches when you get in touch so they can be protected while the crate is coated.
Is powder coating better than paint for a dog crate?
For crates that are washed down often, yes. Powder coating cures into a single hard layer, so it resists chips and scratches better than a typical coat of paint and stays easier to clean.
Can you refurbish a whole kennel block?
If the runs and pens can't be taken down, our mobile team can blast and paint them where they stand. Send us photos and a rough idea of the layout and we'll talk it through.
Do you refurbish crates for kennels and dog trainers too?
Yes. Whether it's one crate for a family pet or a full set for a kennel, trainer or breeder, the process is the same.
